The Hidden Breathing Patterns Keeping You Stuck
A lot of us think stress starts in the mind. We think if we could just think differently, organize better, meditate more, or finally get caught up on life… we’d feel calmer.
But what if your body has been trying to tell you something long before your mind ever catches up?
That’s exactly what hit me during my conversation with Eileen McDonald on the latest episode of the WTF Podcast. Eileen is the creator of the BodyCue IQ™ system and has a master’s degree in Applied Breathing Sciences. And one of the things she said that completely shifted how I think about breathing was this:
Breathing is a learned behavior. Read that again.
Most of us think breathing is automatic. And technically, it is. But the way we breathe? That’s shaped by our experiences, stress levels, nervous system patterns, and even the environments we’ve lived in. During our conversation, I shared that after our prep call, I started paying attention to my own breathing patterns throughout the day. What I noticed surprised me.
Even during relatively calm moments while sitting at my desk working, my breathing was shallow. I was breathing from my chest instead of my diaphragm. I noticed tension in my shoulders and jaw. And I realized I often hold my breath without even noticing it.
On the surface, I would’ve told you I was “fine.” But my body was telling a different story. And honestly? I think a lot of us are walking around like that.
We’ve normalized stress to the point that we don’t even recognize when our nervous system is constantly humming in the background. We stay in go mode. Push mode. Performance mode. And over time, our breath starts trying to keep up with the pace of our life.
That’s why this conversation matters. Because when you begin to understand your breathing patterns, your breath stops being something happening in the background… and becomes a tool you can actually use when you’re in the funk.
Not in a perfect meditation room. Not on a retreat. Not “someday when life calms down.” Right in the middle of the overwhelm.
One of the simplest takeaways from this episode was this: posture matters. Slowing down matters. And simply noticing your breath without judgment can tell you so much about what’s really going on underneath the surface.
Your body is communicating with you all day long. The question is… are you listening?
If you’ve ever felt stuck, overwhelmed, anxious, or like your nervous system just won’t fully power down, this episode is absolutely worth the listen.
