Learning to Trust Your Discernment Inside the System

April 22, 20262 min read

There are rules, expectations, and processes baked into almost every system we operate in.

Corporate. Healthcare. Education. Even our families.

And for the most part, those systems exist for a reason. They create structure. Consistency. Safety. They give us a framework to operate within so things don’t fall apart.

But here’s where it gets tricky…

At some point, if you’ve been paying attention, you’ve probably had a moment where something didn’t quite add up.

Where you followed the process. Checked the boxes. Did what you were trained or told to do…

…and still felt like it wasn’t actually solving the real problem.

That’s the tension.

And it’s uncomfortable, because now you’re not just executing—you’re thinking. You’re observing. You’re questioning.

And that’s where discernment comes in.

Discernment is the ability to pause and ask: Is this actually working?
Not just according to the system… but in real life, with real people, in real situations.

It’s also where judgment—your own internal judgment—starts to matter more than external validation.

Not in a reckless, “burn it all down” kind of way.

But in a grounded, thoughtful way that says:
If I can see a better way… what is my responsibility here?

That question isn’t always easy to answer.

Because choosing to trust what you see or feel often means stepping outside the comfort of the system you’ve been operating in.

And that can feel risky.

It can feel lonely.

It can feel like you’re doing something wrong… even when you know you’re not.

In my latest episode of the WTF Podcast, I sit down with Debbie Pietruszka, who lived this tension firsthand.

After more than 40 years working as an occupational therapist, Debbie began incorporating energy-based techniques into her work—tools that were actually helping her patients in meaningful ways.

But those approaches didn’t fit neatly inside the traditional medical system.

And she found herself in that exact in-between space:
knowing something worked… but not being fully allowed to use it.

Her story is a powerful example of what it looks like to navigate that tension with integrity—using discernment, trusting your judgment, and ultimately choosing to align with what you know to be true.

Because at the end of the day, the goal isn’t to rebel against every system.

It’s to serve people in the highest and best way possible.

And sometimes… that requires us to think beyond the rules.
